The slight understory tree with a slender trunk and branches is a sub-species of the more famous Ohio buckeye, being more compact with greater heat tolerance, though it often sheds leaves in summer.

Native Prairies Association of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter: Prairie Seekers | Exploring Urban Prairies - Fort Worth

Apr 13 2024 - 9:00am to 4:00pm
Northpark YMCA 76244 Fort Worth , TX

Prairie Seekers is going urban this spring! We will meet at Northpark YMCA on N. Beach St. and explore the greenbelt prairie behind the Y. The land comprising the linear park was heavily used as private ranchland for many years and we will look for signs of a recovering native ecosystem. This is a type of prairie urban folks are most likely to encounter. Wildlife such as great horned owls, coyotes, bobcats and bluebirds have been documented using the greenbelt corridor, so it is providing ecological value.

After lunch we will drive a to a prairie patch about two miles south of the Y within the same linear park system that was intentionally set aside as a natural area by the City of Fort Worth when the park was established. The city’s natural resource staff is planning to burn the area this fall. Our goal is to take some pre-burn data, then visit the same site next spring for a post-burn comparison.

Join us as we seek to expand our understanding of the places prairies occupy in our landscapes.

Registrants will receive additional information and make lunch selections 7-10 days prior to the event. Lunch from Panera will be provided thanks to a generous grant from Marsha Stephens.
