The Beautify Texas Awards recognize efforts made by individuals and organizations to enhance their communities and protect Texas’ environment. These awards honor extraordinary volunteers, professionals, youth, educators, businesses, local/civic governments, organizations, and specific projects and programs. They are organized into two main categories, Individual Awards and Organizational Awards.

Dallas Blooms, the largest floral festival in the Southwest, returns February 24-April 8, with 500,000 spring-blooming bulbs, thousands of azaleas, hundreds of Japanese cherry trees and the all NEW living backdrops of sprawling plant walls. These six installations, placed throughout the garden, will feature over 10,000 plants covering 565 square feet.

Dr. Morgan Gostel will share experiences from a recent field trip to South Africa, where he and colleagues traveled more nearly 4,000 miles in November 2023 in search of enigmatic flowering plants in the “ironweed” tribe, Vernonieae (Compositae). This tribe is one of the most species-rich (and complex) groups in the sunflower family, with nearly 1,500 species worldwide.
This trip to South Africa was the first of at least five field trips that Dr. Gostel and his colleagues at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London will carry out to collect species from across the range of Vernonieae in the Eastern Hemisphere. These collections are critical for subsequent analyses that will help botanists understand and classify diversity of these plants.

Liveable Arlington: Hearing on Permit for New Gas Wells - Arlington

Total Energies has applied for permits to drill and frack four new gas wells at their Highpoint site located at 2250 E. Arbrook Blvd. in Arlington,Texas. The site is in District 5 which is represented by Councilwoman Rebecca Boxall.
A hearing and vote for granting a drillzone permit took place on February 27, 2024 before the Arlington city council. A second reading and vote, and then a public hearing and vote for the four gas well permits will take place on Tuesday, March 5.
Once a drillzone permit has been granted, the city of Arlington can approve any number of gas wells in secret inside the drillzone without informing neighbors. For instance, the city approved 17 new gas wells Total's Bruder site in 2022 about 325 feet from homes using this tactic. The resulting drilling that has continued for a year has caused horrendous noise, property damage, horrific emissions, illnesses, according to residents. The city has taken NO action to improve the situation despite many complaints by affected residents.
Residents can speak for three minutes in opposition, sign a card in opposition and raise their hand when their name is called or send an email in opposition.
