Local and regional environmental organizations and residents of Texas will convene and question candidates for the Railroad Commission of Texas.

The inaccurately named Railroad Commission is the state agency that oversees oil and gas development, pipeline safety, coal and uranium mining, and gas utility rate setting among other functions. These functions make the Railroad Commission one of the most important environmental agencies in the state of Texas when it comes to climate change, water quality, and air quality.

Texas produces more greenhouse gas emissions than any other state in the U.S. and the U.S. is the #2 emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Texas’ large share of fossil fuel development contributes to its rank as a global contributor to climate change. The public is invited to attend the forum to learn more about candidates running for one of three Railroad Commissioner seats and their plans for addressing water, air, and climate pollution within their six-year term, if elected.

Democratic Party Candidate Chrysta Castaneda has confirmed her attendance. Republican Party Candidate James Wright was invited, but declined to attend.
