The Dallas Arboretum invites industry professionals to its annual Plant Trials Field Day. Arboretum Horticulture staff will share the garden’s trial results from the acclaimed trial garden program that include data of what plants performed well and which ones survived the Texas weather this past year. The garden also provides awards – FlameProof® and Arboretum Approved – for plants that have thrived and outperformed others.

Another benefit is for suppliers, breeders, growers and landscapers to network with each other and to share best practices. Attendees are able to tour the trial gardens, including the vegetable trial garden that the Arboretum has tested for six years. In 2019, the Dallas Arboretum opened the Tom and Phyllis McCasland Horticulture Center, where the staff has been growing nearly 60 percent of the plants for the garden in a controlled environment before transplanting them to the Arboretum, thus saving thousands of dollars.

Another highlight is A Tasteful Place, a 3.5-acre area dedicated to growing, harvesting and preparing fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits in a healthful manner. The vegetables that have been trialed are transplanted and used in this potager garden, or working kitchen garden, for samplings, demonstrations and more.
