The Opportunity

The WE Over Me Farm at Paul Quinn College is currently seeking a full-time Farm Manager to assist with all farm activities to meet the needs of the Farm's many programs and constituencies. The Manager will participate not only in all aspects of farm production, but also in the teaching and mentoring of Work Program student employees and in the planning and implementation of all Farm events such as farm tours, volunteer workdays, field trips, on-farm classes, and fundraising events.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities of the position of the Farm Manager include the following:

Farm Management:

  • Duties will include crop planning, placing seed orders, daily planting, weeding, harvesting, irrigating, soil amendment and all other farm tasks.

  •  Caring for farm livestock including poultry, bees, and fish and responsibilities including feeding, watering, and cleaning.

  • Coordinate and oversee the distribution of farm production to end-users, including the provision of produce and making occasional deliveries to Paul Quinn students, Dallas based businesses and restaurants, and the Highland Hills community.

  • Safely using and maintaining all farm equipment and infrastructure including tractor, landscaping equipment, tillers, irrigation systems, and greenhouse cooling systems.

  • Assisting with farm marketing, including participation in on and off-campus special events and occasional assistance with farmers’ markets.

    Volunteer, Student, Intern, Staff Oversight:

• Train and direct students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, volunteers, seasonal farm staff, and interns in accomplishing the seasonal work of the farm.

Educational Programming

  •  Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of farm educational programming and events, including volunteer workdays, field trips, farm tours, etc.

  • Lead individuals and groups of many ages in contributing to the work of the farm.

  • Supporting the incorporation of Paul Quinn College curricula into the life of the

    Farm.

    General Activities

  • Prepare and present for approval an annual budget and capital improvement plan.

  • Maintain adequate records to reflect all activities enumerated above.

  • Prepare weekly reports on the status of the farm for the President of the College.

  • Assist with raising funds, including helping with grants, for investment in the farm.

  • The goal of the Farm is to be financially operated, minimally, on a break-even

    basis, (revenue = expenses). This includes the salaries and benefits of the Farm

    staff, and all operating costs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years in farm management.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive supervisory experience.

  • Knowledge and expertise in local produce, crop rotation, and DFW area farming.

  • Commitment to the mission and vision of Paul Quinn College in ending poverty

    and addressing food insecurity, health, and education through the work of the

    Farm.

  • Prior experience working in an educational setting or capacity, particularly with

    youth and college-aged students.

  • Prior experience coordinating volunteers, special events, and media interest.
