Why Support Clean Water Fund's efforts in North Texas?

• Our area, Region C, has 25% of the Texas population and are the biggest users of water in the state.

• We use more water per person than any other region - far above the state average.

• DFW has the greatest potential to conserve water - yet our region has proposed more than $21 billion of $53 billion in statewide reservoir projects - including the controversial Marvin Nichols.

Monthly meetings feature guest speakers on local environmental topics. Check website for meeting agenda.

North Texas Giving Day is an online giving event that provides nonprofits the opportunity to gain exposure to — and start relationships with — new donors, and for people in North Texas to come together to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits. In just six years, North Texas Giving Day has pumped more than $86 million into the North Texas community. In 2014, more than 98,000 gifts totalling $26.3 million benefited 1,580 nonprofits.

The Dallas Sierra Club hosts this comprehensive two-night class in navigation with map and compass. Part 1 is Sept. 23 and part 2 is Sept. 24, both nights from 6:30 – 9pm. Topics include not only how to use your compass but also buying maps, how to read maps, how not to get lost, what to do if you do get lost and different kinds of compasses. We'll discuss GPS devices a little but our main focus will be how to use a map and compass. Bring your own compass or if you don't have one, use one of ours and will show you what to look for when you purchase your own. Bring a pen or pencil for taking notes and for navigation practice exercises. A half-day hike with a class instructor on a subsequent weekend will be offered to class participants who want to practice their new skills. Handouts are included. $40/nonmembers or $35/ Sierra Club members. Pay ahead by charge/PayPal from DallasSierraclub.org or pay at the door (cash or check). Info: [email protected] or 214-368-2306.

The tour enables people to learn how their neighbors – homeowners and businesses alike – are using solar energy, wind energy, energy efficiency and other sustainable technologies to save money and consume less of our natural resources. The strategies and techniques on display during this year’s tour range from things as simple and easy as changing to LED light bulbs and selecting more efficient appliances, to cutting-edge, ultra-efficient eco-homes and businesses that are generating as much or more energy than they consume.

Most sites are open between 10 am and 4 pm (check individual sites for exceptions, non-standard tour times are indicated in red). Homeowners or NTREG volunteers will be available at each site to provide information, share experiences and answer questions. Visit the Locations page and follow the links for each host site to see its visiting hours along with maps, directions, and a brief property description and photos provided by the host site.

 Free.

You will have an opportunity to share your story, your product, your business cards and your passion for the environment with other like-minded women (and men). Non-members are invited, too, but only members will be provided the opportunity to share their information.

Presented by Ricky Linex, Zone Wildlife Biologist, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Weatherford.

Need help finding the best native plants? If you can’t find the plant you want in a nursery, gather seed or transplant it from the wild. There are a lot of good native plants waiting to come into your yard or flower bed. Come hear Ricky Linex's talk on "Fifty Shades of Green, Natives for Your Landscape." Ricky has selected these plants from his 2014, 345-page, color-picture-filled book titled Range Plants of North Central Texas-A Land User’s Guide to Their Identification, Value and Management. You will have the opportunity to purchase the book for $20 and get it signed following the presentation. The book is not available through Amazon or any major publisher, so the price could be kept very reasonable at $20 cash. No credit/debit cards will be accepted, bring cash or a check to the meeting. Online sales are available through BRIT and Native American Seed.
