North Texas Giving Day is an online giving event that provides nonprofits the opportunity to gain exposure to — and start relationships with — new donors, and for people in North Texas to come together to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits. In just six years, North Texas Giving Day has pumped more than $86 million into the North Texas community. In 2014, more than 98,000 gifts totalling $26.3 million benefited 1,580 nonprofits.

The Dallas Sierra Club hosts this comprehensive two-night class in navigation with map and compass. Part 1 is Sept. 23 and part 2 is Sept. 24, both nights from 6:30 – 9pm. Topics include not only how to use your compass but also buying maps, how to read maps, how not to get lost, what to do if you do get lost and different kinds of compasses. We'll discuss GPS devices a little but our main focus will be how to use a map and compass. Bring your own compass or if you don't have one, use one of ours and will show you what to look for when you purchase your own. Bring a pen or pencil for taking notes and for navigation practice exercises. A half-day hike with a class instructor on a subsequent weekend will be offered to class participants who want to practice their new skills. Handouts are included. $40/nonmembers or $35/ Sierra Club members. The tour enables people to learn how their neighbors – homeowners and businesses alike – are using solar energy, wind energy, energy efficiency and other sustainable technologies to save money and consume less of our natural resources. The strategies and techniques on display during this year’s tour range from things as simple and easy as changing to LED light bulbs and selecting more efficient appliances, to cutting-edge, ultra-efficient eco-homes and businesses that are generating as much or more energy than they consume.

Most sites are open between 10 am and 4 pm (check individual sites for exceptions, non-standard tour times are indicated in red). Homeowners or NTREG volunteers will be available at each site to provide information, share experiences and answer questions.
