Urban Forestry Effect, known as UFORE evolved from a recent study and refers to a computer model

that calculates
the structure, environmental effects and values of urban forests.

The UFORE model was developed in the late 1990s by researchers at

the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service,

Northeastern Research Station in Syracuse, NY.

The purpose of  this tour is to describe the unique challenges of building a “green” home on a budget in an urban environment, given high cost of real estate and the current home buying/construction environment.

The tour should be of interest to anyone interested in building a home, considering remodeling/retrofitting, or for learning about green home building in general.

The tour designed for all audiences. The home owners will share their experience in researching how to build a green home, and the challenges encountered during the home building process.

Tours will take pace at 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm.

Admission is $5 at the door with all proceeded going to the Dallas Sierra Club.  The tour location is 8520 Thunderbird Lane in Dallas (just a short distance fro the DART White Rock Station).  Here is a Google Map. Limit 30 people per tour group.  Contact Devin Trousdale to RSVP.

Witness the power and benefits of solar energy when the North Texas Renewable Energy Group visits BRIT. A presentation on solar energy will be given, and the whole family will enjoy the demonstration of a solar shuttle which showcases two full-size, fully independent portable electric systems capable of powering a modest, energy-efficient home. Free.
Glen Suhren, long time member of the Sierra Club, will talk about The Science Behind Global Warming.  He has led numerous backpacking trips in Colorado, summiting several fourteeners with family and friends.  Glen is an Electro Optics engineer who is employed by Abbott Laboratories.  He is a member of an Eco Team at First Methodist Church in Downtown Dallas.  The Team works on informing people about environmental issues such as Global Warming or Climate Change.
Free and open to the public.

Energy plays a major role in the US and global economies. Seven of the top ten companies in Fortune’s Global 500 are directly involved with energy. Energy is critical to each of us in our daily lives, and energy expenditures account for about 8% of GDP worldwide.

Although the energy industry broadly includes petroleum and natural gas ex- ploration and production, this Research and New Venture Showcase will be fo- cused on ground-breaking research and new developments in the generation and storage of electrical energy. A subsequent program, planned for Spring 2012, will focus on electrical energy transmission, utilization and efficiency.

On October 21, 2011, UT Dallas researchers and industry participants will address developments impacting solar power, wind energy, storage integration and the design of advanced electronics used in the management and control of electricity.

$95/person.
