Lights Out Texas: Spring Migration - Texas (March 1- June 15)

Texas is a major flyway for migrating birds. Outdoor lighting can be deadly for the wildbirds who mostly travel by night. The lights distract and disorient them leading to exhaustion and building collisions. Houston and Dallas are ranked in the top three most dangerous cities for migrating birds.

Building owners, businesses, developers and homeowners can help protect migrating birds by turning off all non-essential nighttime lighting on buildings and other structures from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night.

Migration season runs March 1-June 15. Peak migration is April 22-May 12.

This interactive class is for anyone new to backpacking and those who want to refresh their backpacking and camping knowledge and skills. Dallas Sierra Club leaders with decades of trip planning and wilderness trail experience will present a comprehensive overview of backpacking topics including packs, footwear, tents, sleeping bags, food and cooking, clothes, wilderness ethics, sanitation, safety and more.

Cost: $30 (covers class, light lunch of backpacking foods, and handouts)

Pre-registration through the Dallas Sierra Club is required since class size is limited.
