Lights Out Texas: Fall Migration Season - Texas (Aug. 15-Nov. 30)

Lights Out Texas organizers ask that residents, building managers and businesses turn off their outdoor lights from 11 p.m. till 6 a.m. from Aug. 15 to Nov. 30 to prevent bird deaths. Outdoor lighting distracts and confuses migrating birds who typically fly at night.

Peak fall migration season is Sept. 5 to Oct. 29.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is accepting public comments on the proposed rulemaking (Rule Project Number 2024-027-113-AI).

The proposed rulemaking (Rule Project Number 2024-027-113-AI) will address applicability, emission standards, monitoring, recordkeeping, testing, and reporting requirements for designated oil and gas facilities. The rules would set emission standards and/or control requirements for emissions of greenhouse gases (primarily methane) from existing facilities in this industry.

All comments should reference proposed rule project number 2024-027-113-AI. All written stakeholder comments must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

Visiting exhibit features talking animatronic members of the Bug Squad. Guests will learn about each of their superhero stories, super abilities and the unique traits they use each day.

Families are invited to explore various science topics and gain an appreciation for diversity through hands-on exhibits and play areas. Get some air on a trampoline and jump like a grasshopper, explore a multi-platform ant colony climber, and even play with color to mix and design your own wing pattern.

Permaculture Pastures is collecting pumpkins that are typically thrown out after people are done using them for decoration after Thanksgiving.

In 2023, the grass-fed beef company collected more than 1,000,000 lbs of pumpkins to feed their animals and the animals of five other farms for the fall/winter.

No painted, rotted, or bleached pumpkins. All sizes and varieties are accepted including squash. NOT ACCEPTING HAY OR STRAW BALES

Their goal this year is collecting 200,000 lbs to feed their animals and the animals of eight neighboring farm for three months.

About 1 billion pounds of pumpkins are thrown away in the United States every year.

Compost Carpool is hosting two pumpkin recycling events as an easy, clean and convenient way for the communities we serve to sustainably dispose of these nutrient-rich materials and turn them into compost to feed the soil and support local farms.

    •    November 30 at usefull in Dallas, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    •    December 7 at Mindful Market in Fort Worth, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All sizes of pumpkins and gourds will be accepted. Please no painted, bleached, wax or glitter covered pumpkins.

Donation is requested to support our 501c3, Compost Carpool Food Project.

The Food Project supports communities that are underserved by working with local farmers, grocery stores, food suppliers and distributors to limit food waste, increase access to nutrient-rich foods and educate consumers, bridging the gap between abundance and food insecurity to improve health outcomes.
