Lights Out Texas: Fall Migration Season - Texas (Aug. 15-Nov. 30)

Lights Out Texas organizers ask that residents, building managers and businesses turn off their outdoor lights from 11 p.m. till 6 a.m. from Aug. 15 to Nov. 30 to prevent bird deaths. Outdoor lighting distracts and confuses migrating birds who typically fly at night.

Peak fall migration season is Sept. 5 to Oct. 29.

Arlington Water Utilities: Value of Water Mini Poster Contest - Deadline Oct. 9

Arlington students in kindergarten through the fourth grade are invited to enter the contest by illustrating a way they use water or how animals use on their own piece of 8.5 by 11 paper. Pre-K students can complete one of the three coloring sheets posted at www.SaveArlingtonWater.com to enter the contest. This year, all completed entries can be sent to [email protected].

The deadline for entries is Oct. 9. One winner will be chosen from each grade. Each winner will receive water-themed books, fun steam-related sets, along with other fun water-themed prizes. They will also be invited to be recognized at an Arlington City Council meeting this fall.

American Solar Energy Society: National Solar Tour - Texas (Oct. 4-6)

Launched in 1995, the self-guided grassroots tour is hosted by the American Solar Energy Society to promote renewable energy awareness and increase the adoption of solar energy. 

Texas has six locations with homes in Fairview, Irving, Waco and Austin. Two homes are located in North Texas including the Westbrook House in Fairview (Oct. 5) and fellow NTREG member Bill Byrom's home in Irving, (Oct. 4 and Oct. 6). Read more about Bill Byrom's home in GSDFW. Native plants need little water and require no artificial fertilizers to flourish and they provide food and shelter for wildlife.

All proceeds go toward TCA’s habitat restoration projects.

City of Fort Worth: Neighborhood Litter Stomp - Fort Worth

Registration is now open for the 2024 Neighborhood Litter Stomp citywide cleanup, The Neighborhood Litter Stomp is the largest annual fall cleanup hosted by Keep Fort Worth Beautiful.

Litter Stomp aims to promote litter source control and community pride. Sign up as an individual or come with a group and help remove litter from public areas in your community. Volunteers are welcome to choose their own location or can choose from one of the five preselected hub locations listed below:

• North Z Boaz Park
• Arcadia Trail Park
• Chisholm Trail Park

Registered volunteers will receive cleaning supplies for the cleanup the day before the event. Bill Byrom's residence is a high-performance zero-energy building combining solar energy, ground-source heat pump HVAC, a building envelope with a ventilated metal roofing system, ventilated wall system, motorized insulated interior shading system, app-controlled LED smart lighting, rainwater collection, and xeriscaping.

Presentations will start at 10 a.m., and be conducted as follows:

 1. Bill Byrom - Discussion on performance of the solar power system in the first year of operation, rainwater collection system overview, electric vehicle ("EV") charging, Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV overview, and general information about his house.
2. Tony Robinson - Axis Design-Build - Overview of the house design and materials.
3. Sol-Ark - System inverter manufacturer and performance monitoring software.
4. Fortress Power - Battery Energy Storage System ("ESS". Lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4 battery used in the house.
5. Wallbox - EV charger installed in the garage of Bill's house.

After the presentations, Bill and the other presenters will be available to answer questions.
