The Sunrise Movement Denton Chapter is hosting a youth-led candlelight vigil for heat deaths in the Denton community. Per organizers:
"Extreme heat is devastating communities across the globe and right here in Denton, Texas. More than 300 people died from heat in Texas in 2023. With the record-breaking heat waves seen this summer, 2024 will be another deadly year. Sunrise Movement Denton is mobilizing to hold a vigil for heat deaths and to call on FEMA to recognize extreme heat as a major disaster. This move would allow for FEMA funds to help localities prepare for heat waves and provide resources to state and local governments during heat emergencies. With global temperatures rising and each year predicted to be hotter than the next, it is more important than ever to hold politicians accountable for pursuing bold climate action."
