Texans for Mountain Lions: Public Comment (Deadline May 22)
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners will be voting on a proposal that would prohibit canned hunting of confined mountain lions and require trappers to routinely check their traps every 36 hours.
Of the 16 states where mountain lions live, Texas is currently the only state that does not regulate the hunting and trapping of the species, which leaves the wild cat vulnerable to abuse.
The deadline for public comment on 31 TAC §65.950 is May 22 at 5 p.m. The vote will be held at a TPWC meeting on May 23, 2024 in Austin.
Friends of Piedmont: Restoration Day - Dallas
Friends of Piedmont is a casual group that loves the ridge. Joe, Kristi, Linda, Sharon and I would love for you to join us! It'll take a while, but trail signs are underway. After a break, if we're not too tuckered, we may hike the JJ Beeman Trail that connects to Scyene Overlook.
Our focus will be on the Lacewood Overlook Trail, and then if we have energy the Scyene Overlook Trail.
For this restoration day we'll:
• Pick up trash as needed.
• Cut privet and photinia away from the trail.
• Re-mark the trail with biodegrable marking tape.
• Use the Extractigator to yank up small privet and nandinas.
• Drag cut brush and fallen timber to block eroding trails sections
Please register so we can notify you if the date changes due to weather: https://volunteersignup.org/99ETT
Wear:
• Sturdy closed-toe shoes
• Leather or garden gloves

Native Prairie Association of Texas, Blackland Chapter: LBJ Grasslands Tour - Decatur
LBJ Grasslands Tour covering ecological sampling by the National Ecological Observatory Network.
This hike led by Blackland NPAT Chapter president and botanist for NEON Canaan Sutton will take us through the sandy prairies and woods of the northern grasslands (Unit 75) to look at the unique plant communities there, as well as the ways in which NEON collects data on presence/absence and phenology of species at different spatial and temporal scales. We will see plot outlines for diversity sampling, litterfall catch collectors and the NEON flux tower (from below) and sampling arrays. If there is enough time we may also head down to the limestone prairie in the southern grasslands (Unit 49).
This will be an active terrain hike of about two miles likely with a high heat index. This tour is not recommended for small children or guests with limited mobility. Please be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and protective clothing. Safety vests will be provided for attendees.
