Texans for Mountain Lions: Public Comment (Deadline May 22)

May 1 2024 - 8:00am to May 22 2024 - 5:00pm
Online TX

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners will be voting on a proposal that would prohibit canned hunting of confined mountain lions and require trappers to routinely check their traps every 36 hours.

Of the 16 states where mountain lions live, Texas is currently the only state that does not regulate the hunting and trapping of the species, which leaves the wild cat vulnerable to abuse.

The deadline for public comment on 31 TAC §65.950 is May 22 at 5 p.m. The vote will be held at a TPWC meeting on May 23, 2024 in Austin.

Let’s take a walk, meet some cool plant and animal species, and contribute to citizen science. You don’t have to be an expert. Maybe you’re interested in finding cacti, flowers, lizards, or birds and uploading photos of them to the nature app “iNaturalist” or other citizen science app like eBird. You would also be welcome if you just want to come along with us, enjoy nature, and learn a little.

We will have folks who know the preserve well and know iNaturalist and can help you use it. There may be one or more Texas Master Naturalists with us who can give you pointers on discovering nature at the preserve.

UPDATE: The trails will be muddy so we will limit ourselves to the sidewalk down to the fishing pond (and the boardwalk), and the pollinator meadow.
