Lights Out Texas: Fall Migration (Aug. 15 - Nov. 30)

Lights Out Texas is a campaign to turn off lights at night between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during spring and fall wildbird migrations to help protect nocturnally migrating birds.

Originally launched in 2017 by Houston Audubon, Lights Out Texas has grown statewide and is facilitated by Audubon Texas in collaboration with conservation non-profits, universities, governmental organizations and Texans dedicated to the conservation of birds.

The full fall migration starts Aug. 15 and ends on Nov. 30.
The peak fall migration is Sept. 6 through Oct. 29.

Walk at Sid Richardson Tract followed by lunch talk and discussion at nearby picnic pavilion.

Re-create the prairie hike from the Sid Richardson Tract chapter of Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature Around Dallas-Fort Worth with author Amy Martin. Along with her from the chapter will be Kate Morgan, sitting in for Suzanne Tuttle, and Jo Ann Collins of Native Prairies Association of Texas' Fort Worth chapter and NPAT's North Texas Director of Outreach and Stewardship, Carly Aulicky (tentative).

Experience the landscape as it was when the Native Americans roamed it and get to know the sky as half the scenery. See the prairie grasses starting to set beautiful seedheads and the last round of summer sunflowers. Watch for grassland birds migrating through.

Then take a brief drive to a nearby Benbrook Lake picnic shelter at 7001 Lakeside Dr. in Fort Worth for a 15-min talk plus 5-min Q&A, followed by book signing.

Bring a bag lunch!

Julie Mattox will present on her experiences transforming a dairy into a prairie.

While operating her own surveying consulting firm, Julie had the opportunity to explore various ecosystems throughout the US. Working alongside professionals such as paleontologists, archaeologists, biologists and botanists, many of whom were grassland specialists, Julie developed a passion for the prairie ecosystem.

She and her husband relocated to Northeast Texas in 1996. Fourteen years later, she had the chance to purchase a dairy surrounding their original property, and the prairie restoration began.
