Lights Out Texas: Fall Migration (Aug. 15 - Nov. 30)

​Lights Out Texas is a campaign to turn off lights at night between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during spring and fall wildbird migrations to help protect nocturnally migrating birds.

Originally launched in 2017 by Houston Audubon, Lights Out Texas has grown statewide and is facilitated by Audubon Texas in collaboration with conservation non-profits, universities, governmental organizations and Texans dedicated to the conservation of birds.

The full fall migration starts Aug. 15 and ends on Nov. 30.
The peak fall migration is Sept. 6 through Oct. 29.

The 15-acre Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park is open daily for self-guided tours from sunrise until sunset 365 days a year. Pets are welcome. Embark on either a self-guided or group tour through the beautiful and sustainable park, building and grounds.

Guided tours will be available for free every Saturday at 10 a.m. starting Sept. 30 through Nov. 18. Weather permitting.

Tours begin in the Freedom Plaza by the fountain.

Texas Recycles Day is an annual event held by the City of Plano that allows residents to drive through, drop off and donate specific household items to our community and local nonprofit organizations. The donations collected benefit thousands of people as items are reused or recycled, keeping these items out of our landfill.

Please only bring items listed on the website and below. Items not listed will be turned away.

Accepted Items:

Arts and crafts supplies (accepted supplies: https://thistlecreativereuse.com/pages/donate-materials)

Bicycles: all conditions and sizes accepted

Electronics*: all electronics, anything that plugs in, batteries, wires and cables (accepted items: https://unitedelectronicrecycling.com/items-we-accept/)

Native Prairies Association of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter: Prairie Seekers Training - Montague County

Our next Prairie Seekers adventure will take place in southern Montague County, near the LBJ National Grasslands at the Thomsen Foundation, LLC. Our special guide will be Dr. Lisa Bellows, Foundation Director and retired Chair of the Science Division at North Central Texas College in Gainesville.

The Foundation's property is intricate and diverse, with limestone mesa, sandy Cross Timbers lowland and riparian/wetland biotic communities to explore. Extensive landscape-scale restoration and management have been ongoing since its acquisition. Besides covering plant ID and general prairie ecology, we will make comparisons between the plant communities on the mesa top and the sandy valley below it. We'll also discuss land management techniques and goals for the property.

Registrants will receive additional information and detailed directions to the site. Lunch will be provided by the Foundation.
