NCTCOG: DFW High-Speed Transportation Study - Online Public Comment (Deadline Oct. 10)

Sep 10 2023 - 8:00am to Oct 10 2023 - 5:00pm
Online TX

The public recently had several opportunities to weigh in on plans to connect Fort Worth, Arlington and Dallas with high-speed rail service. The North Central Texas Council of Governments held a series of four open houses in August and September to gauge the opinions of potential users of the system.

There is still time for the public to weigh in on the project before the end of the 30-day comment period. Comment here by Oct. 10 to provide feedback on the Fort Worth-to-Dallas line.

The formal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process of the Dallas-Fort Worth High-Speed Transportation Connections Study is set to kick off soon, during which the environmental and social impacts of the proposed route, which mostly follows Interstate Highway 30, will be evaluated. The NEPA process must be completed within a year of its start date. Once the line has been environmentally cleared, it will be easier to begin discussing funding mechanisms. Ultimately, the project could include some combination of public- and private-sector funds.

Jeff Quayle: Camp Leroy Shuman Fall BioBlitz - Fort Worth

Sep 17 2023 - 9:00am
TBA TX

Camp Leroy Shuman, a campground for boys and girls, opened in 1920 and was closed in 2009. The property is owned by the City of Fort Worth and is accessible through permission. It is one of the first scout camps in Fort Worth. Today, the flagpole and the remains of the mess hall are still there. There are plenty of old trails here, although some are slightly overgrown. Numerous deer graze on the grasses near dark.

The camp is predominately a Post Oak/Blackjack woodland, with scattered open patches of sandy, Western Cross Timbers prairie. Typical woody species are Post Oak (Quercus stellata), Blackjack Oak (Quercus marilandica), Possumhaw (Ilex decidua), Carolina Buckthorn (Frangula caroliniana) and Rusty Blackhaw (Viburnum rufidulum). Various grasses and forbs exist in the understory and in the scattered patches of sandy prairie.

We will be focusing on providing valuable data for management using iNaturalist observations. There is an existing iNaturalist project page titled “Camp Leroy Shuman.”  We will be focusing on providing valuable data for management using iNaturalist observations.

Hosted by master naturalist Jeff Quayle.
