Lights Out Texas (March 1-June 15)

Lights Out Texas is a campaign of education, awareness, and action that focuses on turning out lights at night during the spring and fall migrations to help protect the billions of migratory birds that fly over Texas annually.

Lights Out Texas advocates say darkening city skies is most crucial during spring migration's peak.

  • Full Migration Period: March 1 – June 15 

  • Critical Peak Migration Period: April 22 – May 12

Native Prairies Association of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter: Hike at LLELA's Barn Owl Ridge - Lewisville

Hike led by LLELA Director Richard Freiheit and UNT ecology instructor Dr. Jaime Baxter-Slye. 

Barn Owl Ridge, an area within LLELA, is not normally accessible to the public. The hike will be conducted in an approximate 30-acre native Texas Blackland Prairie reconstruction site. Over 650 taxa from fungi to chordata have been documented at Barn Owl Ridge within LLELA, with 196 plants identified. 

Porta potties are located at the dam outfall parking lot and the classroom area. After the hike, meet at air-conditioned classroom for snacks and discussion about our finds. You can then proceed on your own to LLELA's public trails until closing at 7p.m.

Suggested donation amount is $10. Donations will benefit Native Prairies Association of Texas (conservation & land trust organization) and LLELA, Lake Lewisville Environmental Learning Area. Donations are non-refundable.

North Texas Water Garden Society: 2023 Tour of Ponds - DFW (June 10-11)

Thirty-eight exquisite ponds from the comical, to high tech, to Zen, to whimsical and more traditional ponds will be open to visitors all over the DFW Metroplex. These pond enthusiasts have prepared all year to share their ponds this weekend. Nine ponds will be open for the Enchanted Night Tour on Saturday until 11 p.m. Twelve of the 38 are new to the tour this year.

When: Saturday, June 10, gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for the enchanted night tour.

Sunday, June 11, gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost: $20 for tour book guide, which features 38 pond listings, descriptions, directions, and color pictures. It also includes a map and pond related articles of interest. One book per carload will get you access to all 38 ponds. Books can be purchased from now to June 11 at selected retailers or online at www.NTWGS.ORG.

About the Presentation:

As retail electric providers and other utility companies scale back on credit for backfed energy, electric vehicles ("EVs" may provide an on-site reservoir for storing and releasing some of that excess electrical energy. "Vehicle-to-Grid" (V2G) is attracting attention from many areas of the renewable energy market. Our June 10 meeting will introduce "V2G" concepts, and answer related questions.

About the Presenter:

As a National Sales Director for Fermata Energy, Brian is responsible for the growth and leadership of Fermata Energy's market expansion of Vehicle 2 Grid, Electric Vehicle Adoption and the electric Vehicle fleet sector. Brian earned a masters degree in communication management from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature/Letters from DePaul University.
