Lights Out Texas (March 1-June 15)

Lights Out Texas is a campaign of education, awareness, and action that focuses on turning out lights at night during the spring and fall migrations to help protect the billions of migratory birds that fly over Texas annually.

Lights Out Texas advocates say darkening city skies is most crucial during spring migration's peak.

  • Full Migration Period: March 1 – June 15 

  • Critical Peak Migration Period: April 22 – May 12

The Wildflower Walk will be led by Carol Clark, a Texas Master Naturalist, member of the Native Plant Society of Texas and Conservation Specialist with Monarch Watch. She and her husband own and operate Clark Haven, a wildlife preserve and custom wildflower seed business in Cooke County. Carol grew up with a nature photographer father and wildlife artist brother and has spent much of her life looking around and learning in the great outdoors. Her favorite things to do are leading discovery walks in local natural areas, finding and photographing interesting plants.

LBJ Grasslands Project: Evening Walk - Alvord

Meet at the parking area (bare ground just off FS908 for one of the pine groves - Google Maps and check out nearby prairie and ponds. As it gets dark, we will listen for frog calls, coyotes, owls and other sounds of the night. Some may need to bail out early and others will stay till at least 9 p.m. when it's really dark.
