Lights Out Texas (March 1-June 15)

Lights Out Texas is a campaign of education, awareness, and action that focuses on turning out lights at night during the spring and fall migrations to help protect the billions of migratory birds that fly over Texas annually.

Lights Out Texas advocates say darkening city skies is most crucial during spring migration's peak.

  • Full Migration Period: March 1 – June 15 

  • Critical Peak Migration Period: April 22 – May 12

Native Plant Society of Texas: Native Texas Plant Sales - Statewide (Thru May 6)

Each spring and fall, Society volunteers plan and host native plant sales. Texas native plants can be difficult to find at the typical nursery, so these sales are crucial to promoting the conservation, research, and utilization of native plants in Texas yards and landscapes.

See upcoming native plant sales in North Texas in this list compiled by the Native Plant Society of Texas.  If you don’t see a plant sale near you right now, check back later because NPSOT will be adding sale dates as they learn about them. Here are some of the North Texas plant sales:

McKinney 

April 22 – 23: Times vary. At Heard Museum (1 Nature Place, McKinney). Hosted by Collin County Chapter. 

Flower Mound 

April 29: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Flower Mound High School (3411 Peters Colony Rd., Flower Mound). Hosted by Trinity Forks Chapter. The sale will be in the back parking lot, corner of Old Settlers and Sagebrush. 

Dallas

May 6: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Native Plants and Prairies Day, Bath House Cultural Center (512 East Lawther Dr., Dallas). Hosted by Dallas Chapter. 

Arlington

May 6: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Elm Grove Pavilion, River Legacy Park (701 NW Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington). Hosted by North Central Chapter.

Dallas Coalition for Hunger Solutions: Urban Garden Survey - Online

In 2016, the Dallas Coalition for Hunger Solutions began collecting surveys from local gardens. Our goal is to collect as much information as possible to connect people and resources for greater success across the city and around Dallas County. 

The information collected becomes part of a data base that informs the Urban Agriculture Action Team as it works to increase and support sustainable, local food production and fresh food access in and around Dallas.

The survey takes approximately 5 minutes.

Comerica Bank and Iron Mountain Incorporated will shred sensitive paper documents for free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 at Iron Mountain’s DFW flagship station located in Mercer Business Park on the northwest corner of I-35 and 635 (12121 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas 75237).

All paper from Shred Day DFW will be turned into pulp and recycled after being securely destroyed.

The public, including small business owners and nonprofits, is invited to bring personal or business paper documents to be securely destroyed and recycled. There is no limit to the amount of paper individuals can bring – there will be a special lane for large loads (trucks, flatbeds, trailers, etc.q).

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary: Spring Native Plant Sale - McKinney

For over 30 years, veteran and novice gardeners alike have anticipated this rare opportunity to purchase some of the best plants for North Central Texas gardens and obtain many rare plants. The Heard's plant sales also often feature a selection of native milkweed plants. Please see our website for the complete plant list (available soon) at HeardMuseum.org/Plant-Sale. Guests are welcome to bring carts or wagons to facilitate their purchases.

The plant sale will be open to the public on April 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on April 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission is not required to attend the plant sale.

A Heard Museum Member Pre-Sale will be offered on April 21 from 4-7 p.m. The Member Pre-Sale is open to Heard Museum members only; however, memberships will be available for purchase at the event or online beforehand.

The Arlington Conservation Council (ACC), Neighbors of Randol Mill Park (NORMP), and the UTA College of Science (COS) are sponsoring an Earth Day celebration at Randol Mill Park. The City of Carrollton is going all out for Earth Day 2023 with workshops, an art contest, crafts, and more at the Josey Ranch Lake Library on Saturday, April 22 from 1 to 3 p.m.

There will be informational sessions from the U.S. Plastics Pact, a global network combating plastic waste, and Republic Services, the city’s solid waste provider, as well as hands-on activities for all ages including creating your own bee hotel, building compostable bird feeders, making seed balls, and painting flower pots.

Join Carrollton’s Neighborhood Partnership Office and Denton County Master Gardeners to learn about tree planting, climate change, plastic pollution, Texas SmartScape, and other sustainable practices at the Josey Ranch Pocket Prairie, located just behind the Library. RSVP required.
