Lights Out Texas is an intiative launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology with support from nonprofits including the Texas Conservation Alliance and Texan by Nature to raise awareness about the dangers of light pollution for migrating birds. 

The program asks homeowners, businesses and managers of tall buildings to eliminate or reduce lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the peak of the fall migration, Sept. 6 to Oct. 29, 2022.

The theme of the 17th annual Autumn at the Arboretum is A Fall Fairy Tale.

The fall festival features more than 100,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash from the Pumpkin Capital of Texas, Floydada.  A Fall Fairy Tale showcases the return of Cinderella’s carriage, along with themed pumpkin houses that make up the acclaimed Pumpkin Village. Other “gourd-eous” displays showcase classic tales of Jack and The Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Sword in the Stone and even a magic carpet ride selfie experience from One Thousand and One Nights.

Morning:

8:30 a.m. - Birding with Merlin Bird ID, with Lynn Healy

 If you want to use Merlin Bird ID on your own phone, please load the app on your smartphone before you arrive.

Afternoon:

1:30 p.m.  - Information Table

The Friends will have a table near the parking lot area to greet attendees and answer questions about the afternoon’s activities. Guests can sign-in there and pick up information about the preserve.

2 p.m. - Mindfulness at Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve, with Michael Smith

Mindfulness refers to a full awareness of the present moment.  

4 p.m.  - A Walk Through Time in a Battered Land, with Jim Frisinger

How invaders for 170 years changed the preserve’s ecosystem – and how we’re trying to bring it back.

EarthX Film & DSO: 'The Way of Rain, Hope for Earth' - Dallas

Inspired by the annual monsoon rains that sustain life on the fragile landscape of the high – desert plateaus of the Southwest, The Way of the Rain – Hope for Earth tells the artistic story about the formation of the Universe, the evolution of all galaxies, and eventually the birth of our unique and beautiful Planet Earth. The performance interprets nature’s powerful beauty while calling attention to the Earth’s vulnerability brought on by climate change. 

This multidisciplinary performance for orchestra, chorus, film and visual art was created by artist Sibylle Szaggars Redford, composer Tim Janis, and film artist Floyd Thomas McBee, and will feature live narration by Academy Award winner Robert Redford.

Cost: $45 to $250.
