Lights Out Texas is an intiative launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology with support from nonprofits including the Texas Conservation Alliance and Texan by Nature to raise awareness about the dangers of light pollution for migrating birds. 

The program asks homeowners, businesses and managers of tall buildings to eliminate or reduce lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the peak of the fall migration, Sept. 6 to Oct. 29, 2022.

Dallas Arboretum: A Fall Fairy Tale - Dallas

The theme of the 17th annual Autumn at the Arboretum is A Fall Fairy Tale.

The fall festival features more than 100,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash from the Pumpkin Capital of Texas, Floydada.  A Fall Fairy Tale showcases the return of Cinderella’s carriage, along with themed pumpkin houses that make up the acclaimed Pumpkin Village. Other “gourd-eous” displays showcase classic tales of Jack and The Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Sword in the Stone and even a magic carpet ride selfie experience from One Thousand and One Nights.

Greenspace Dallas: Frasier Dam Cleanup - Dallas

What we’ll be doing:

Clean-up along the edge of the river, forest, and creek bed using our 32" long trash grabbers (gloves available for use)

We will have the canoes out for any volunteers interested in cleaning the debris in the water.

SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PIECE: Abby Heath will be taking anyone interested on a bird walk. You will learn about resident species, as well as those migrating through the north Texas flyway. Open to all ages.

About: The DFW Solar Tour enables event-goers to learn how their neighbors are using solar energy, energy efficiency, batteries and other sustainable technologies to save money and reduce their carbon footprint. The 13th annual self-guided event is hosted by North Texas Renewable Energy Group in cooperation with the Texas Solar Energy Society and the American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour.

When: Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There's also a Zoom presentation at 8 a.m. on the day of the tour.

Where: Six locations, in Dallas, Plano and Frisco.

Experts from the natural resources, property development, urban planning, working lands and corporate sectors will share their perspectives on how open space can benefit urban development, followed by a panel discussion.

The evening also supports NPAT’s North Texas outreach, stewardship, and education programs. Director Dr. Carly Aulicky works with local landowners and communities to protect, restore, and appreciate native prairies. Sponsorships are available.
