Lights Out Texas - Statewide (Sept. 6-Oct. 29)

Lights Out Texas is an intiative launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology with support from nonprofits including the Texas Conservation Alliance and Texan by Nature to raise awareness about the dangers of light pollution for migrating birds. 

The program asks homeowners, businesses and managers of tall buildings to eliminate or reduce lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the peak of the fall migration, Sept. 6 to Oct. 29, 2022.

The theme of the 17th annual Autumn at the Arboretum is A Fall Fairy Tale.

The fall festival features more than 100,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash from the Pumpkin Capital of Texas, Floydada.  A Fall Fairy Tale showcases the return of Cinderella’s carriage, along with themed pumpkin houses that make up the acclaimed Pumpkin Village. Other “gourd-eous” displays showcase classic tales of Jack and The Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Sword in the Stone and even a magic carpet ride selfie experience from One Thousand and One Nights.

Botanical Research Institute of Texas: Sunflower Workshop and Walk - Fort Worth

Enjoy a hands-on workshop presented by the instructors Drs. Richard Spellenberg,  Naida Zucker and Tim Lowrey. The workshop will be an introduction to the structure and identification of the Sunflower Family (Asteraceae) using illustrations and live material. You will need a copy of the book The Sunflower Family: A Guide to the Family Asteraceae in the Contiguous United States by Spellenberg and Zucker, purchasable in our BRIT gift shop or at the free Native Sunflower Plant Talk and Book Signing event the evening before.

Participants are encouraged to bring a 10X hand lens or loupe. The workshop will conclude with a casual walk, searching for plants in the Asteraceae family, and looking at the features that must be understood for their identification. Lots of chance for one-on-one conversation with the instructors.
