Lights Out Texas is an intiative launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology with support from nonprofits including the Texas Conservation Alliance and Texan by Nature to raise awareness about the dangers of light pollution for migrating birds. 

The program asks homeowners, businesses and managers of tall buildings to eliminate or reduce lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the peak of the fall migration, Sept. 6 to Oct. 29, 2022.

Volunteers are needed to participate in litter cleanup, hosted by Tarrant Regional Water District, at the following locations:

        Sept. 10 at Lake Bridgeport

        Sept. 17 at Eagle Mountain Lake

        Sept. 17 at Trinity River in Fort Worth

        Sept. 24 at Cedar Creek Lake

Botanical Research Institute of Texas: Native Sunflower Talk - Fort Worth

Participants will enjoy a fully illustrated presentation by Drs. Richard Spellenberg, Naida Zucker and Tim Lowrey. The talk will feature highlights from Spellenburg and Zucker’s book The Sunflower Family: A Guide to the Family Asteraceae in the Contiguous United States. Participants will learn fun facts about species of sunflowers, daisies and asters that are native to North America.
