City of Fort Worth: Your Better Yard Workshops - Online

Jul 31 2021 - 10:30am to Aug 7 2021 - 12:30pm
Online TX

A free workshop aims to help homeowners make the most of their yards while saving time, money and water by matching tips with how they use their spaces.

“Your Better Yard” is a program developed by the EPA WaterSense program and presented by the Fort Worth Public Library and the Fort Worth Water Department.

The virtual workshops are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 31, and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.

The workshops not only feature suggestions from Your Better Yard, but the Water Department is dropping in tips for Fort Worth residents to save water by using native and adaptive plants, following water schedules, using drip irrigation and more. Conservation is so important locally because of the summer heat, and the tips can help save money as well.

Experts Patrick Dickinson and Daniel Cunningham will host the programs. They both work with Rooted In, a DFW-based group of horticulture and conservation experts that offers a holistic, science-based approach to meeting the demands of an ever-changing Texas landscape. The two-part series will explore eight yard lifestyles, four per session.

Free.

Native Plant Society of Texas, North Central Chapter: Discovering Diversity in
One Square Meter of Mature Prairie - Online

Aug 5 2021 - 6:30pm
Online TX

In 2018, Chris Helzer embarked upon a journey to photograph all the beauty and diversity he could find within a single square meter of prairie in Aurora, Nebraska. The project was intended to share with oth- ers the diversity and value of prairies, but it ended up inspiring Chris much more than he’d expected. He came away with thousands of photographs, including more than 100 species, but the numbers represent- ed only a small part of the results. By sitting quietly and intently watching a small space, Chris was able to see the prairie in a much more intimate way than he was used to. He had a window into the lives of the tiny organisms that make up prairie communities and got to follow both their stories and the story of the prairie itself through the seasons. The project has resonated with others well enough that it has been turned into a book and is the topic of an upcoming museum exhibit and potential documentary.
