Lights Out Texas: Statewide (March 1-June 15)

Lights Out Texas launched last spring, led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The program encourages homeowners, building managers and businesses to turn out outdoor lights from March 1 to June 15  from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the spring bird migration in Texas. Turning off interior lights or closing drapes and shutters will also help to reduce light pollution. The peak migration window is between April 19 to May 7.

 

Lights Out Texas: Bird Survey - Dallas (April 1-May 27)

Texas Conservation Alliance and Perot Museum seek volunteers to help conduct bird survey for Lights Out Texas program. They will be surveying for 50 mornings from 6-8 a.m. focusing on a 10-building route to document bird deaths during spring migration due to building collesions.

PARKING: Enter the Perot Special Event/Permit Parking Lot by way of Field & River Streets. Push the intercom button at the gate and let security know you are there for Lights Out. They will admit you. 

WALK: We'll walk between 3-6 miles at a leisurely pace – comfortable shoes are recommended. 

CLOTHING: Light-colored clothing is a good idea for high visibility. You will be crossing many streets on foot. 

RESTROOMS: Available sporadically along the survey route

GEAR 

    •    A flashlight or headlamp helps you see birds pre-dawn.

    •    A camera phone, with the iNaturalist app https://www.inaturalist.org/ downloaded, helps you document your findings but is not required.

Ennis Garden Club: Bluebonnet Trails - Ennis (April 1-30)

From April 1-30, Ennis showcases over 40 miles of mapped driving Bluebonnet Trails sponsored by the Ennis Garden Club. These trails are the oldest such trails known in the state, and tens of thousands of visitors make the short trek to Ennis to view this wonderful wildflower show. In Ennis, the bluebonnets typically peak around the 3rd week of April, according to the Ennis Garden Club. This can vary year to year due to weather conditions and terrain, so please check website below or call 972-878-4748 before your visit.

Texas A&M: SUSTEX SUMMIT 2021 - Online (April 22-23)

The objective of our primarily virtual SUSTEX2021 Summit is to gather current and future leaders from academia and industry to discuss current challenges and to present solutions that advance sustainable organizational practices. In doing so, this year's conference emphasizes sustainable solutions in challenging times through the lens of SUSTEX’s foundational themes.

Deadline for submissions is March 10.

Cost for the two-day virtual event is $150 for accepted faculty and industry presenters, $75 for accepted student presenters, $50 for non-presenting attendees, and $25 for TAMUCT faculty and students. Due to Covid-19, there are a limited number of invited onsite seats available at an additional cost of $100, which will include snacks, lunches on Thursday and Friday, and dinners on Wednesday and Thursday. Onsite attendees will benefit from additional networking and discussion opportunities.

Dallas Arboretum: Earth Day Celebration & Artscape - Dallas (April 22-April 25)

On Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, at 10:30 a.m., Window to the Wild Bird Show performs, and visitors are invited to spend the day outdoors connecting with nature.

On Saturday, April 24, there are hands-on, outdoor activities located in the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This festival features engaging learning experiences and special guest workshops, centered around celebrating the planet and learning how to take care of it for generations to come.

Additionally, on April 24 and 25, guests are invited to the main garden to explore Artscape, a juried fine art and fine craft show and sale, where 85-plus outstanding artists from around the country showcase and sell their art in the garden. In addition to artwork, many of which takes its inspiration from nature, the popular outdoor event features live music, free children’s ‘make and take’ art, concessions, food and wine/beer samplings.

Timed tickets are required and can be purchased online or by calling 214-515-6615. No walk-ups are available for purchase. Masks are also required for the duration of the visit.

City of Dallas: Celebrate Earth Day with Climate Action - Online

Hear about Dallas efforts to move forward on implementing the 97 actions in this 30-year plan with 48 in progress for this year. We can mitigate climate change, take the steps with us.

Dallas College: Earth Day Celebration - Online

Last year’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day was muffled by the quarantine restrictions. This year, Dallas College is making up for it with fun and informative Earth Day events. 

Dallas College begins its celebration one day early, on April 21 at 3 p.m., with a live, drive-in concert in the North Lake Campus parking lot featuring Vocal Trash. Vocal Trash is described as “Music with a message: Think … before you throw it away!” Join this green-minded ensemble for its catchy jam on Wednesday.

At 4 p.m. on April 22, Earth Day, student Ferdinando Castro Gonzalez will host the Instagram Live event “51st Anniversary of Earth Day — Young Leaders Promoting Sustainability Around the World.” The event’s student panelists are:

GSDFW: 'Green Source On the Air' - Zoom

GreenSourceDFW.org, North Texas’ award-winning environmental news publication, announces a new monthly live program on Zoom. Green Source On the Air will kick off on Earth Day, hosted by Green Source DFW Director Wendel Withrow. The show will cover current and local environmental topics and feature guest interviews and live Q&A with our audience. Green Source DFW and Green Source On the Air are both projects of the Memnosyne Institute, a Dallas-based nonprofit.
