With a few days to think about the election, I believe that, based on the new administration's declared plans and track record, the threat to our environmental protections is a clear and present danger, which must be addressed.
Whether the attack be on the natural beauty and sanctity of what wilderness we have left or the safety of our drinking water or the air we breath, every one of us must do their part.
The first line of defense will probably come in the court system, but this must be supported by public opinion and public pressure from all Americans. Clean water, clean air and a sustainable future for our children are not partisan issues.
If immigration and inflation caused an election to be lost, make sure these issues do not allow a return to pre-1970 ideas where pollution sent down the storm drain is just a by-product of a modern economy. We know out of sight does not mean the danger is not there.
Cancer causing products are already taking their toll. Do your conservative voting neighbors really think they are immune?
When the polluters take political control next year, make sure your voices are heard loud and clear. Support your local and national environmental groups. Unite with your friends from all religions to get the message out. This election was not a referendum on 50 years of progress.
Finally, I urge all responsible citizens to use their pocketbook and how they spend their money to reward companies who value recycling and other zero waste initiatives. Going green is good business.
While the election pain is still fresh, the words of Winston Churchill a few days after Pearl Harbor are instructive: “What kind of people do they think we are?"
Churchill knew that the Brits and Americans were not going to quit fighting tyranny. And after more than three decades of environmental battling, I know this nation of dedicated and devout treehuggers will not give up. Ever!
