Restoring native plants to our yards is of the most important things we can do to help our ecosystems.

There are many benefits for both humans and critters.

Native plants typically are more drought tolerant and require less water than exotic species. They also provide food for pollinators, caterpillars and other wildlife.

Fortunately, it's getting easier to find them in garden centers such as North Haven Gardens in Dallas and Painted Flower Farm in Denton. On the west side of the Metroplox, there's Weston Gardens, Archie's Gardenland and the online store EcoBlossom in Fort Worth. Stuart's in Weatherford also carries some natives.

Meanwhile, the grassroots native plant movement continues to grow.

The Native Plant Society of Texas, headquartered in Fredericksburg, was an early promoter of Texas flora. Founded in 1981, it's been encouraging conservation, research and the use of native plants for four decades.

We're fortunate to have several chapters of the Native Plant Society of Texas in our region along with other institutions dedicated to promoting native plants.

While many volunteer-run native plant sales were put on hold last year due to the pandemic, some organizations are opening their sales back up this spring.
