April 8, 2020

Not too long ago, most people had never heard the word ‘vegan.’ However, over the last few years, many local entrepreneurs have taken a chance and opened some amazing restaurants that are either vegan, vegetarian or at least offer plant-based options. It’s been exciting to see many of them succeed – that was, until the coronavirus struck and their business dropped off. Some are even reporting a decrease of 75 percent, which has caused staff layoffs and worse. The Garden Cafe, a Lakewood favorite of local greenies, has closed (hopefully temporarily). So it’s important that we show our support to those that are struggling to keep their doors open.

Most of your favorite restaurants that offer local or plant-based options are finding creative ways to serve their customers. Whether you’re ordering online or over the phone – and picking up curbside or having it delivered, you can be sure you’ll still be able to enjoy some delicious plant-based fare.

One of my favorite vegan restaurants is V-Eats Modern Vegan located in the Trinity Groves area of Dallas – and it’s great to be able to eat well by doing good when I order from them.

“I am sure that the Vegan Community will inevitably overcome this crisis, said V-Eats head chef Troy Gardner said. “But in the meantime we need them to bond together and continue to support vegan and green businesses as much as they can.”

Though the whole V-Eats menu is just one delicious meal after another, I am hooked on their all vegan Steak Plate with Fries – and I can’t miss the Cauliflower Bites as an appetizer.

V-Eats is currently offering free delivery within 5 miles through their website or free delivery across a wider area if you order through Postmates using the promo code YUMFOODYUM.

They are also launching a new vegan food delivery and catering business called TLC Vegan Kitchen in Garland. Check out to see their down home Easter menu set for delivery on April 11 with choice of salads, sides, entry and dessert.

Seasoned mushrooms, quinoa, and lentils are rolled up in organic corn tortillas and topped with a tasty cheese sauce - made from cashews and potatoes from Nature's Plate.

Nature’s Plate, a local vegan take-out shop, has two stores in Dallas and one in Plano that offer daily grab-and-go meals. If you opt into their weekly food subscription service, you will have a guaranteed order ready for pick up every Sunday and even get discounts when buying over a certain amount: 5 percent off at $75 and 10 percent off at $100. They also have delivery through Grubhub and DoorDash. Although their entire menu is amazing, I can personally recommend their Mushroom Stroganoff and also the BBQ Ribs. Wow!

Spiral Diner brunchSPIRAL DINER

Spiral Diner features a vegan brunch menu to-go on Sundays.

A local staple for plant-based comfort food, the all-vegan Spiral Diner has three locations in Dallas, Fort Worth and Dallas. Their streamlined menu includes their most popular items, including burgers, home fries and the ever popular Nachos Supremo, as well as shakes and brownies. Look for daily specials and brunch items on the weekend. Curbside pickup and delivery available via DoorDash.

KALACHANDJI’S

Another great plant-based choice in Dallas is Kalachandji’s – a vegetarian and vegan international buffet which is offering takeout and also delivery through DoorDash. Eating at this unique restaurant has always been fun for me and my family and we look forward to trying some take-out soon. Visit Kalachandjis.com or call 214-821-1048 for more information.

REVERIE BAKESHOP

Reverie Bakeshop tiramisuTiramisu from Reverie Bakeshop features vanilla cake soaked in espresso filled with vegan coffee cream cheese and ganache topped with vegan whipped cream.

If you’re craving some vegan sweets and plant-based kolaches, Reverie Bakershop in Richardson is the bomb! They’re currently offering online ordering and curb-side pickup with a 24-hour notice and also delivery within a 5 mile radius for a small $2 fee, minimum order is $25. Some of their popular items include tiramisu and cheesecake. I’ve had both and literally wanted to eat the plate – so it’s nice to know that they are staying open.

“Curbside pick-up orders are the best help for us right now,” said owner Nancy Castillo. “It gives our employees work, it helps us circle through our ingredients so nothing spoils, and it helps us pay bills and rent immediately.”

A limited menu is available and updated daily. Call 972-238-7511 or visit ReverieBakeshop.com to help support this amazing locally-owned vegan bakery.

The Healthy Hippie expanding

Construction on The Healthy Hippie's expansion continues and is expected to completed by this summer.

THE HEALTHY HIPPIE

For folks on the west side of DFW, The Healthy Hippie Cafe offers a diverse vegan menu in Watauga, north of Fort Worth. Call-in ordering and carry-out/curbside pickup are available and you can also order through their website with DoorDash or Grubhub or call 817-849-9080.

Some of my favorite menu items include the Chorizo Mac Bowl and their incredible Nachos. They will also put together a Quarantine Kit for $50 which comes with two meal prep bowls with your choice of patty, a large hummus, four protein bars, a snack box of fresh veggies, and a River Refresh hand sanitizer. The Healthy Hippie has plans to expand their current space slated to be finished in the summer. Kudos to them!

Righteous Foods curbside pickupRIGHTEOUS FOODS

Righteous curbside pickup.

Another Fort Worth hot spot is Righteous Foods. Some of their vegan and vegetarian menu items include yucca fries and a variety of different bowls. I can tell you from experience that they are awesome. At press time, their delicious vegan burger was not on the menu. Call and ask for it, maybe they’ll add it on. They’re doing ordering for pickup or delivery. Visit Eatrighteously.com or call 817-850-9996.

So though the Coronavirus has been a challenge for everyone, we can still help these restaurants stay afloat and perhaps even rehire staffers by sending them our business.
