Sept. 14, 2021

With the February freeze and the ongoing pandemic, 2021 has been another challenging year for many North Texans already struggling to keep food on the table. That's why food justice is the topic for this month's Green Source On the Air, airing Thursday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m., live on Zoom.

Guests will discuss food justice issues in our local communities and how they’ve responded to residents in crisis. We’ll also discuss how food and environmental issues are related.

Marcus RussellMarcus Russell, founder of Commissary is Very Necessary, speaks at a Dallas Sierra Club meeting. Courtesy of Dallas Sierra Club.

For example, food insecurity often occurs in communities where environmental injustices are also present.

Solutions such as community gardens are a movement embraced by food justice and environmental advocates alike.

Gardens not only help relieve food deserts and promote healthy eating, they raise awareness of eco-friendly gardening methods and our connection to the earth.

Likewise, redistribution of excess food to those in need – food that would otherwise go to the landfill – tackles both food insecurity and food waste.

Our guests include Dawan Shockley, cofounder of the Wyatt-Shockley Community Garden in Dallas.
