As North Texans recover from a chilling week, the extreme winter weather further demonstrates the urgency of addressing climate change, say climate experts.

And with a new President and Congress open to green legislation, the DFW chapter of the Climate Reality Project says now’s the time to ramp up climate advocacy on all fronts.

“The mission of the Climate Reality DFW Chapter is to make urgent action on the global climate crisis a reality at every level of society in North Texas,” says Brittany Baum, a spokesperson for the Climate Reality Project’s DFW chapter.

To enlist more climate activists, the DFW group is promoting the Climate Reality Leadership Corps’ virtual training, hosted by its parent nonprofit..

The DC-based Climate Reality Project is the consolidation of two groups founded in 2006, by former vice president Al Gore, who currently serves as chairman of the board of directors.

Last year, the international climate advocacy group hosted its training online for the first time due to the pandemic. Past training sessions were held in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami as well as around the world. The workshop will be held online for the second year. Kicking off on Earth Day, there will be four days of two-hour sessions, with additional on demand viewing and interactive sessions from April 22 to May 2. The training is free.

According to the website, attendees of the workshop will learn how to network to effect policy change and inspire local communities to act. Sessions will feature leading climate experts and activists focusing on fighting for an equitable and sustainable future; stopping fossil fuel expansion; accelerating just climate solutions; and driving federal climate action in the U.S.

The DFW chapter of the Climate Reality Project was founded in 2017. Today, the local chapter has more than 100 trained leaders and has stayed active, despite the pandemic. Last year, the group gave over 150 public talks, mostly virtual.

Baum said participation in the leadership training program has also remained high at both the international and local level.

“Nearly 10,000 climate champions across the globe completed one of the two virtual training programs last summer, including more than 50 in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex,” said Baum

Baum, who completed the program last year, says educating more people about climate change is key to phasing out fossil fuels.

“The two things I got out of the training were a sense of empowerment and community," she said.
