Faye Davis is the new assistant director of sustainability for outreach and engagement. Neil Kaufman is the new assistant director of sustainability for urban agriculture and food security.

Davis is a graduate of Concordia University in Austin, where she received her MBA in management and communications. Before coming to Dallas College, Davis was the director of student life at Navarro College.

Kaufman has a degree in wildlife biology from Texas State University. Prior to coming to Dallas, he was the sustainability manager for university housing and dining at UT Austin.

Georgeann Moss, the Senior Director of Sustainability for Dallas College, said the new additions are part of a redesign of how sustainability is coordinated across the school’s seven campuses.

It began with the promotion of Moss as Senior Director of Sustainability in 2018, after she developed the college’s Sustainability Team and served as its chair for many years.

With the consolidation of Dallas College in 2020 from seven independently accredited colleges into a unified institution, the sustainability department was also streamlined.

Previously, there were sustainability coordinators for five out of seven of the institution's campuses.

Now there is a staff of six working in the same office, each with their own areas of focus.

“We pulled them under the same umbrella, so we can be more effective and coordinated,” said Moss.

The sustainability staff and their specialities include: Lori Delacruz Lewis in academia; Brandon Morton in operations and Sonia Ford in special projects, such as reporting and overseeing the school’s Tree Campus USA program. New hires Davis and Kaufman will specialize in outreach and food issues, respectively.

Davis is responsible for producing the weekly Sustainable U webinars and the annual Sustainability Summit. She also will be supporting the student and employee sustainability/green teams and engaging new partners to collaborate with Sustainable Dallas College.

Kaufman will be overseeing the campus gardens, collaborating with faculty members who want to use the gardens to support their courses and teaching community members how to garden, compost and recycle. Additionally, he will be partnering with other food security organizations in Dallas County on collaborative projects.

REACHING 'STARS' GOAL

Moss said being able to work together as a team has already proven to help the department achieve a major goal — completing an academic sustainability assessment report called the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System or STARS, a program of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education

“We have always wanted to do the STARS self-assessment but in the past, each college would have had to do one individually, making it a mammoth project,” said Moss. “Completing this is an excellent example of how the reorganization is helping us be more effective.”

Moss said another position in the department is in the works and will be announced soon.
