“Trashing Our Treasure” Photography Exhibit at Dallas City Hall, Main Lobby July 16-August 10, 2012
Dallas, TX, July 15, 2012 – Shared FUEL, a Dallas-based sustainable nonprofit, today announced that “Trashing Our Treasure,” a photography exhibit of litter at White Rock Lake, will be displayed in the main lobby of Dallas City Hall from July 16 through August 10. The event is free and open to the public.
Designed to educate, inform and motivate individuals to be aware of the environmental consequences of litter on our green public places, “Trashing Our Treasure” debuted during last year’s centennial celebration of White Rock Lake. The exhibit focuses on unnatural predators, such as styrofoam, plastics, aluminum cans and glass, that accumulate along the shoreline, particularly during storm events, and encroach upon the area’s wildlife habitats.
According to Alison Parker, exhibit coordinator and Shared FUEL’s program chair of The Litter Project, “We are excited about showcasing this educational exhibit at City Hall and encourage families to view it. We hope the photography transforms how people think about litter and its impact on nature.”
Says Annemarie Marek, president of Shared FUEL, “We care deeply about White Rock Lake because it is a green retreat for so many diverse groups and people in our city. We are very excited about the visual conversation that this show will generate and hope that it will motivate all to collaborate and innovate better ways to mitigate the litter problem.“

Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week, March 22-Oct. 20, 2012, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. around the gazebo. Our family has been in the Farmer’s Market Business for several generations. As a result, produce is not just a career-choice, its a passion. We guarantee you the best selection around: if we wouldn’t feed it to our kids, you won’t find it in our market.
Located 16 miles south of downtown Dallas in Cedar Hill, Dogwood Canyon is part of the White Rock Escarpment. Nowhere in North Texas can one find a greater variety of rare species than in Dogwood Canyon. Plants and animals from east, west and central Texas converge here, making the Canyon the only place in the world where one can find the Black-chinned Hummingbird of west Texas nesting in the flowering dogwood tree of east Texas.
Audubon owns or manages over 200 acres of nearly pristine wildlife habitat in the Canyon. Because the property neighbors university, county, and state lands, it is part of a nearly 3,000 acre greenbelt in southwest Dallas County. As of Grand Opening (September 10-11, 2011), there are 1.65 miles of trail winding up the Canyon (the West Rim Trail). The ½ mile, ADA-accessible Canyon Floor Trail will be completed this spring. The Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center is open to the public and will provide science education initially to 5,000 school students on an annual basis from the surrounding DFW Metroplex.

The Center for the Commercialization of Electric Technologies (CCET) will present the draft “Texas Triangle Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Readiness Plan.” The plan addresses the corridors connecting Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin-San Antonio and Houston and explores ways to educate Texas consumers about PEV costs and benefits.
Plug-in electric vehicle charging infrastructure is in place and continues to develop in Texas’ largest metropolitan areas, and progress is being made to eliminate other barriers to PEV readiness in these regions. It is also crucial to focus on the corridors between the large population centers to ensure medium-size and smaller cities are able to make gains in electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development.
CCET will hear questions, concerns and suggestions about the plan during the meeting.

The North Texas Environmental Meetup is about meeting other like-minded environmentally-conscious people to discuss environmental issues both on a global and local level.
This film is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Design by the Gallon: Architecture and Water Conservation.
"Liquid Assets," a 90-minute documentary, tells the story of essential infrastructure systems: water, wastewater, and stormwater. These systems — some in the ground for more than 100 years — provide a critical public health function and are essential for economic development and growth. Largely out of sight and out of mind, these aging systems have not been maintained, and some estimates suggest this is the single largest public works endeavor in our nation’s history.
We will begin the evening with a reception and light refreshments, followed by the screening at 6:30 p.m. As always, we'll stick around for a few minutes afterwards for a discussion of the film.
$10 donation requested at the door. To RSVP, send e-mail to info@DallasCFA.com.

living in Antarctic, as documented in the film "March of the Penguins" or the movie "Happy Feet."
But did you know there are actually 17 species of penguins living on the planet today? And
believe it or not, a number of them live in warm climates. David Salomon, photographer and author of the new book Penguin-Pedia, introduces the 17 species of penguins that the majority of readers may have never known existed -- and will be fascinated to learn about.

Amphibian Watch - Every Third Thursday of the month at 8:15 PM from June through September
Amphibians are a barometer of the health of the environments we all share. Because amphibians use wetland habitats during at least part of their life cycle and because they have permeable skin, ecologists believe that declines in amphibian populations and malformations may serve as early warning indicators of broader changes in ecosystems.
Texas Amphibian Watch gives you a chance to help us understand what frogs, toads, and salamanders are telling us about the world around us.
Chimney Swift Monitoring - Every Third Thursday, 8:00pm, June - September
Small, sleek, bluish-black with silver-gray throats, chimney swifts have been called "flying cigars" and "bows and arrows." Their stiff, acrobatic movements alternate with long, graceful sweeps of flight as they scour the skies for flying insects.. Unable to perch or stand upright as songbirds do, chimney swifts are uniquely equipped to roost clinging to vertical surfaces. Although they will occasionally roost in the open, chimney swifts prefer the safety of an enclosed area such as a chimney, air shaft or abandoned building. It is in these inaccessible locations that they roost, build their nests, raise their families and congregate prior to migration.
As a result of deforestation and the loss of large hollow trees as natural roosting and nesting sites, chimney swifts adapted to using man-made structures.. However, the use of metal chimneys and the increasing desire of homeowners to cap their chimneys have made chimney swift roosts rare.. Since each breeding pair must have a site of their own to raise their young, suitable nesting sites are harder to find.
Join Audubon staff and volunteer, Natha Taylor as we monitor our own on-site Chimney Swift tower.
Texas Turtle Watch - Every Third Thursday, 5:30pm, June - September
Texas Turtle Watch is a citizen science program developed to collect data on three native turtle species whose population numbers are poorly understood. In efforts to learn more about turtles, the information collected by citizens is critical. Assessing basking turtle populations through trained citizen watch groups of all ages and interests will help scientists create a knowledge base about turtle populations in Texas, which will lead to better conservation efforts and strategies. The three turtle groups of focus are sliders (genus Trachemys), cooters (genus Pseudemys) and softshells (genus Apalone).

Both the customers and the farmers/producers have shaped the market to what it is today, guided by a community-based organization, the Coppell Farmers Market Committee. The guidelines for the Coppell Farmers Market state that all products sold at the Coppell Farmers Market shall be grown, raised, and/or produced directly by the vendor within the North Central Texas region, with the exception of full disclosure and approval of selling another’s product.

Event is hosted by the Rural Dallas Ecovillage Meetup Group. We are ready to buy land--or at least put an option on land and do further due diligence. There are two ways to participate in this sustainable way of living in this area of Hunt County east of Rockwall.
1. You can buy land with the ecovillage, close at the same time, and be neighbors of people who share green living goals that include sustainability and other permaculture principles--a loose connection of neighbors that won't be using Roundup on their land.
2. You buy land in the ecovillage and participate in an off-the grid life based on permacutlure principles and practices.
We can compare the two--what is similar, what is different, estimated costs, etc.

One of the pioneers of today’s natural handmade soap-making community, Ann Bramson, in her book “Soap,” says, “Where the hard pastel-colored bars sold at the drugstore are anonymous and indifferent, homemade soap has character. It charms...it smells good...feels good...is comforting in ways which manufactured soap can never be.” She is so right! If you’ve never tried a bar of natural handmade soap, you’re in for a real treat. If you have tried one, and know just how wonderful it is, you’ll be surprised that making your own fantastic soaps is not as difficult as you think.
