http://tx.audubon.org/Dogwood.html
Located 16 miles south of downtown Dallas in Cedar Hill, Dogwood Canyon is part of the White Rock Escarpment. Nowhere in North Texas can one find a greater variety of rare species than in Dogwood Canyon. Plants and animals from east, west and central Texas converge here, making the Canyon the only place in the world where one can find the Black-chinned Hummingbird of west Texas nesting in the flowering dogwood tree of east Texas.
Audubon owns or manages over 200 acres of nearly pristine wildlife habitat in the Canyon. Because the property neighbors university, county, and state lands, it is part of a nearly 3,000 acre greenbelt in southwest Dallas County. As of Grand Opening (September 10-11, 2011), there are 1.65 miles of trail winding up the Canyon (the West Rim Trail). The ½ mile, ADA-accessible Canyon Floor Trail will be completed this spring. The Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center is open to the public and will provide science education initially to 5,000 school students on an annual basis from the surrounding DFW Metroplex.

determine if your trees have been affected, what are the long-term consequence of the drought,
and how to properly water your trees -- both newly planted trees and established trees.
Matt Grubisich has a B.S in Urban Forestry and Forest Management from Iowa State
University and has been working in the Urban Forestry field for over 12 years in the DFW area.
Matt spent 8 years with the Texas Forest Service as the Regional Urban Forester for the Dallas
area. Following that, he spent 2 years as a private consulting arborist/urban forester specializing
in Oak Wilt and Urban Tree Canopy Assessments and management plans. He is now with the
Texas Trees Foundation as their Director of Urban Forestry, where he oversees the production of
5,000 trees in the TTF nursery and is in charge of project development and project

Project AWARE
Two of the major crises in our oceans today is marine debris (trash in our fresh and
saltwater waterways) and the peril of losing an important cog in preserving the balance of nature
– the wolves of the sea. David Prichard is a professional scuba diving instructor and freelance
writer/photographer of over 30 articles in international scuba publications covering exotic dive
sites around the world. He will explain about the top issues facing our oceans and local
waterways from the intentional and indiscriminate dumping of trash in our crucial water sources,
plus explain how misunderstood sharks are in their important role in keeping our oceans healthy
and in balance.
David is a PADI IDC Staff Instructor with over 1,000 dives in many of the most popular
dive locations around the world, with experience diving caves, famous shipwrecks (underwater
archaeology), and participating in many underwater clean-up operations to rid our freshwater
and saltwater recreational areas of man-made debris. David is one of thousands of scuba divers
worldwide who participate in Project AWARE programs to clean up our home beneath the
waves. You can find more about such projects at www.projectaware.org. David and his wife,
Lily Mak, started Enchanted Sea Images, Inc. in 2001 and invented a popular scuba product (see
more information at www.enchantedsea.com).

Green Move Night is Back in July!
The next Green Movie Night will be Friday, July 13th, at 7:00 p.m. when we will be showing "Tapped" a provocative look at the many down-sides of bottled water--and how citizens are beginning to rise up and push back. By shining a light on threats to community water sources, risks to human health, pollution of the oceans, and mountains of plastic trash, Tapped sounds a clarion call to kick the bottle and return to the tap. And it calls on governments to fulfill their crucial role as custodians of the public trust in water."

Fort Worth’s original, producer only farmers market. Wondering what “producer only” means? It means that everything sold is either grown, raised or produced within 150 miles of Fort Worth. In short, it’s the easiest way to go green while getting your greens.
Cowtown Farmers Market is open every Saturday, 8 am til noon–rain, sleet, snow, or shine. Market is open Wednesdays, 8 a.m. until noon, June – November.
Other markets: Downtown Fort Worth, Richland Hills, Tarrant County Health Department and Resource Connection are open for the season. Details, click here.
All markets accept Lone Star/SNAP, WIC cards, cash and credit/debit cards.
We welcome farmers and growers who practice natural, sustainable, organic farming. The products must come from within a 150 mile radius of Dallas County to assure freshness. Special foods such as baked goods, tamales, cheeses, eggs, local honey, meats, and pastas will also be available. All vendors must grow, produce, or make at least 60% of what they sell at the Saint Michael Farmers Market.

North Texas Renewable Energy Group Meeting
Presenters: Ron Seidel, Director at Principal Solar, and Dallas Observer reporter Brantley Hargrove
When: Saturday, July 14, 2012
Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon
Texas Public Utility Commission Chairman Donna Nelson is so concerned about Texas’ image that she is afraid that telling the public to conserve electricity on hot summer afternoons will send a message that we’re running out of power and discourage companies from wanting to do business here. (http://stateimpact.npr.org/texas/2012/06/27/rolling-blackouts-a-black-eye-for-texas/).
On June 28 the Texas PUC voted to raise the price cap on wholesale electricity prices during peak demand times by 50%, hoping that higher prices will entice power companies to build more electricity plants. Ironically, with the price of natural gas falling through the floor and in a state that produces most of its electricity using natural gas, Texas electricity consumers won’t be able to enjoy the lower electricity prices they might expect.
Is the Texas PUC doing the right things to make our electricity reliable?
How high does the price of electricity have to go to lure investors to build more power plants?
How long does it take to build a power plant?
How much can consumers help by conserving?
How do renewables, distributed generation, and demand response fit in?
Don’t just have an opinion – make it an INFORMED opinion! Learn about these issues and bring your questions to the next meeting of the North Texas Renewable Energy Group at 10 am on Saturday, July 14.

“Trashing Our Treasure” Photography Exhibit at Dallas City Hall, Main Lobby July 16-August 10, 2012
Dallas, TX, July 15, 2012 – Shared FUEL, a Dallas-based sustainable nonprofit, today announced that “Trashing Our Treasure,” a photography exhibit of litter at White Rock Lake, will be displayed in the main lobby of Dallas City Hall from July 16 through August 10. The event is free and open to the public.
Designed to educate, inform and motivate individuals to be aware of the environmental consequences of litter on our green public places, “Trashing Our Treasure” debuted during last year’s centennial celebration of White Rock Lake. The exhibit focuses on unnatural predators, such as styrofoam, plastics, aluminum cans and glass, that accumulate along the shoreline, particularly during storm events, and encroach upon the area’s wildlife habitats.
According to Alison Parker, exhibit coordinator and Shared FUEL’s program chair of The Litter Project, “We are excited about showcasing this educational exhibit at City Hall and encourage families to view it. We hope the photography transforms how people think about litter and its impact on nature.”
Says Annemarie Marek, president of Shared FUEL, “We care deeply about White Rock Lake because it is a green retreat for so many diverse groups and people in our city. We are very excited about the visual conversation that this show will generate and hope that it will motivate all to collaborate and innovate better ways to mitigate the litter problem.“

Yup, that's right. Landfill means 'dump'. This is the second opportunity we've been given in the upcoming months to see what happens past our curbside pickup. If you consider yourself to be 'green' then you should get a good grip on the 'rest of the story' to quote the great Paul Harvey.
This event is being offered up in conjunction with the City of Dallas and the North Texas Council of Governments. Read on for the specific information.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition and the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) would like to invite you to tour the McCommas Bluff Landfill facility in Dallas! The tour will take place on Tuesday, July 17th from 9am to approximately noon.
The McCommas Bluff landfill is an award-winning, professionally engineered and highly regulated landfill operating in southern Dallas. It is the only landfill in the State of Texas to achieve certifications for environmental management and quality management. Among its many other awards, in 2010, the U.S. Conference of Mayors awarded Dallas its Green City Award for the city's landfill gas management project.
You will learn how methane gas is captured, cleansed, and processed. Attendees will be exploring the McCommas Bluff in a school bus provided by Dallas County Schools, who operates the 5th largest school bus fleet in the country powered primarily by propane and biodiesel. The bus tour will take about an hour, followed by a short presentation at the facility.
Parking is limited at the landfill and attendees are encouraged to meet at the NCTCOG offices at 9am to board the bus to the facility.
Space is limited so reserve your free spot here: mccommastour.eventbrite.com.

Produced, written and directed by Rob Tranchin, the film features rare archival footage, historic photographs and interviews with the poiciticians, business leaders and environmental activists of the 1970s. During this time an important battle over the environment took place in Texas. At stake was the future of the 500 mile long Trinity River. On one side were those who hoped to transform the entire length of the river into a barge canal linking Dallas and Fort Worth to the Gulf of Mexico. On the other side were those who wanted the river left alone.
Amphibian Watch - Every Third Thursday of the month at 8:15 PM from June through September
Amphibians are a barometer of the health of the environments we all share. Because amphibians use wetland habitats during at least part of their life cycle and because they have permeable skin, ecologists believe that declines in amphibian populations and malformations may serve as early warning indicators of broader changes in ecosystems.
Texas Amphibian Watch gives you a chance to help us understand what frogs, toads, and salamanders are telling us about the world around us.
Chimney Swift Monitoring - Every Third Thursday, 8:00pm, June - September
Small, sleek, bluish-black with silver-gray throats, chimney swifts have been called "flying cigars" and "bows and arrows." Their stiff, acrobatic movements alternate with long, graceful sweeps of flight as they scour the skies for flying insects.. Unable to perch or stand upright as songbirds do, chimney swifts are uniquely equipped to roost clinging to vertical surfaces. Although they will occasionally roost in the open, chimney swifts prefer the safety of an enclosed area such as a chimney, air shaft or abandoned building. It is in these inaccessible locations that they roost, build their nests, raise their families and congregate prior to migration.
As a result of deforestation and the loss of large hollow trees as natural roosting and nesting sites, chimney swifts adapted to using man-made structures.. However, the use of metal chimneys and the increasing desire of homeowners to cap their chimneys have made chimney swift roosts rare.. Since each breeding pair must have a site of their own to raise their young, suitable nesting sites are harder to find.
Join Audubon staff and volunteer, Natha Taylor as we monitor our own on-site Chimney Swift tower.
Texas Turtle Watch - Every Third Thursday, 5:30pm, June - September
Texas Turtle Watch is a citizen science program developed to collect data on three native turtle species whose population numbers are poorly understood. In efforts to learn more about turtles, the information collected by citizens is critical. Assessing basking turtle populations through trained citizen watch groups of all ages and interests will help scientists create a knowledge base about turtle populations in Texas, which will lead to better conservation efforts and strategies. The three turtle groups of focus are sliders (genus Trachemys), cooters (genus Pseudemys) and softshells (genus Apalone).
TRAC is a partner with many organizations
- Cornell Lab of Ornithology (eBird monitoring of the bird population and the Great Backyard Bird Count)
- Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (Mussel Watch program)
- Ladybird Johnson Wildlife Center (Invaders of Texas Program, to detect and report invasive species)- Nine people attended our first Invaders of Texas workshop on March 28, 2009. Participants learned the problem with exotic invasive plants, how to identify them, and how to report a sighting. Matthew Mortimer won a new GPS unit for being the first participant to enter 50 validated sightings.
Anyone can be a member of these projects and participants are given thorough training for all of them. For more information, please contact Sahar Sea at 214.309.5813 or ssea@audubon.org.

By way of design, air conditioning units produce condensate water that must be removed to prevent water damage to the equipment and the building structure. Most often, the central air conditioner (AC) condensate drains off of the A-coil into a drip pan; then runs into a hose connected to the sewer system. Did you know that a central AC for an entire home can collect 5 to 20 gallons of condensate water per day, equating to more than 300 gallons per month in the summer. Depending on the location of the central AC, this water can be easily captured, stored and used. Students in this class will learn more about the benefits and how to collect water from the AC unit.

Come on down and enjoy an old time market…sometimes we’ll have special events and entertainment! While not as diverse as the old Jockey Lot held in downtown McKinney during the mid 20th century, we’ll try to re-create the feel of the old market days. Meet friends, share local news and bring a chair and sit a while!
